The industry has grown an average 3.5 percent each year during the past decade, with research and health care leading the way. It is also a high-tech powerhouse where emerging fields of study such as bioinformatics, biofuels and bio-based chemicals, nutraceuticals, nanotechnologies and personalized medicine are opening up new opportunities.
